Green Tea: Why Is It So Popular For Weight Loss?
In the last few years the popularity of green tea diets and diet products have been springing up all over. I don’t think that you can surf on the net for fifteen minutes without seeing a banner or ad for one. But how did it all get started and more importantly, why?
People have always been searching for a miracle diet pill, patch or lotion or basically anything that will help them avoid proper diet and exercise, yet still allow them to lose weight . Enter ephedrine. Ephedrine to many appeared to be this miracle pill as it single handedly curbed the appetite very efficiently, and gave us the energy to effortlessly make it through the day without tiring. The love affair between dieters and ephedrine lasted quite a long time until dieters realized that they built up a tolerance to ephedrine and need to take more and more capsules, which exacerbated it’s negative side effects such as a racing heart beat, sleeplessness and nervousness. Several then abused the products and many state governments raced in and put an ban on products containing ephedrine (which some have now repealed).
About the same time as the ban on ephedrine was occurring, studies on the positive effects of drinking tea were being released. It was noted that tea, the green variety in particular, had some major health benefits with boosting metabolism without the negative side effects that was often seen with other herbs or pills. Although it was found that this tea is also high in anti-oxidants, and may help lower cholesterol levels, it was the fact that it could help with weight loss that made this tea come into the spotlight.
Even though it was first thought that it’s caffeine content was causing a natural thermo genesis effect, after closer investigation it appeared that green tea has additional thermogenic properties which can raise basal metabolism by approximately 4.5 percent. This 4.5 percent is no where near the metabolism boosting rate that ephedrine has, but green tea has not been associated with any of negative side effects that often is attributed to fat burners and in fact this tea has many positive effects on the body as mentioned earlier. Since it does contain some caffeine, those who are caffeine sensitive should take with caution.
Many health authorities recommend that in order to take advantage of the metabolism boosting properties of this tea, a dieter should drink three to four cups per day. It should be noted that if one consumes bottled, sugared tea, the calories from the sugar outweigh the benefits of the the tea, so drink your tea without sugar. There are also many green tea diet pill, concentrated mixtures and capsules on the market for those who either don’t care for the taste of tea or who find that trying to fit in four cups a day is a bit hard. Many people are taking these products not just for the weight loss properties but for the health benefits as well.
You should also be aware that other varieties of tea such as red, white and black also contain anti-oxidants, and several other health benefits, and studies are now being conducted to see whether they also have the natural metabolism boosting properties of green tea.
Instead of grabbing for that energy drink in the morning, why not make it tea time instead?
